Caravan Privacy Policy

Caravan is an Android app for synchronized PDF viewing on a pair of devices. The app does not require an account or a user login.

Data the app uses

• local device ID used for pairing
• remembered paired device IDs
• selected library folder URI
• recent files and favorite files
• viewer defaults and annotation tool preferences
• page annotation overlay files for opened documents

Document handling

• PDF files are opened from Android document picker selections or from a user-selected library folder.
• Caravan does not modify the original PDF in place.
• Page annotations are stored separately as local overlay files.
• Saved annotations can be exported by the user as a local annotation bundle file.

Pairing and sync

• When remote sync is configured, Caravan uses Firebase Realtime Database for pair state, presence, pairing requests, and annotation transfer metadata.
• Pair state is used only to support the current paired-device workflow.
• The app is designed to keep local file access available even when remote transport is unavailable.

Sharing

• Caravan does not publish opened PDF files to other users by default.
• Annotation sync only targets the currently paired device flow.

Permissions

• Camera permission is used only for QR-based pairing.
• Internet access is used for remote pairing and synchronized state when Firebase is configured.

Data retention

• Local preferences and annotation overlays remain on the device until the app data is cleared or the files are removed by the app.
• Remote runtime pair state depends on the current transport behavior and server-side cleanup.

Android backup

• Android cloud backup is disabled for Caravan app data.
• Local pair state, remembered document URIs, and annotation overlays are intended to stay bound to the current device.

Website

• The public download page at caravan-reader.top uses Google Analytics 4 to measure page visits and APK download clicks.
• The website does not require a user account.
